Introduction to Loudspeaker Design
by John L Murphy

Introduction to Loudspeaker Design
is written for hobbyists, students, technicians and engineers seeking an overview of the technology of loudspeakers. Starting with a brief history of audio developments the book begins by introducing the concepts of frequency, pitch and loudness and proceeds to develop the idea of a loudspeaker as a system.

The book covers such topics as loudspeaker design tradeoffs, spatial loading, diffraction loss, cavity effect and enclosure design. A complete chapter is devoted to the subject of crossover design. The appendices contain technical references, design aids and a chart depicting 18 different loudspeaker enclosure types.

The illustrated 208 page paperback 2nd edition is priced at $24.95.

Sound Reproduction
by Floyd Toole

Floyd Toole's book is now in its 3rd edition and is an excellent reference that belongs in the library of every loudspeaker designer. I have a copy and a spare!   jlm

Loudspeaker Design Cookbook
by Vance Dickason

Vance Dickason's Cookbook is now in it's 7th edition and is a favorite among speaker designers. The book is illustrated with many examples of measured and simulated responses. It contains enough equations and charts to allow you to design design a complete speaker system without resorting to computer simulation. It has chapters devoted to closed, vented and passive radiator systems.  Another chapter is devoted to crossovers and includes equations for calculating component values for the most popular crossovers through 4th order types. I have the 3rd and 5th editions in my library.   jlm

Designing, Building and Testing..
by David Weems

First recommended to me by Don Keele in the early 1980's, I still have a hard bound copy of the 1st edition along with my paperback copy of the 2nd edition. The 4th edition is now available. Weems gives a lot of practical advise on enclosure construction. The book includes Keele's calculator method of vented box design.   jlm

Speaker Building 201
by Ray Alden

I see the Alden book recommended frequently in online discussions. I am looking to acquire a copy of my own.   jlm

High Performance Loudspeakers
by Martin Colloms

This reference is now in its 7th edition. I purchased the 2nd edition in 1980 and have referred to it regularly over the years.   jlm

Theory & Design of Loudspeaker Enclosures
by J. E. Benson

Along with Thiele and Small, Benson is one of the early architects of scientific loudspeaker design methods. This is a highly technical book with a rigorous mathematical treatment of closed, vented and passive-radiator type systems. His closed box treatment is interesting in that he includes losses for these enclosures.   jlm

Advanced Speaker Designs for the Hobbyist & Technician
by Ray Alden

A practical book for those getting started in speaker building.

jlm

Introduction to Electroacoustics and Audio Amplifier Design
by W. Marshall Leach

This is a senior level electrical engineering textbook with heavy math. Grab a copy while it is back in print.   jlm

Audio Electronics Titles

IC Op-Amp Cookbook
by Walter G. Jung

Jungs Op Amp Cookbook is an indispensable aid to anyone doing audio circuit design. Now in its 3rd edition this classic just keeps getting better and better. My 1st edition copy has served me well over the years and is well worn.   jlm

Lancaster's Active Filter Cookbook
by Don Lancaster

This active filter reference has all the information you need to design active filters for audio and other applications. Besides giving easy to follow recipes for the various filter types Lancaster also provides just the right amount of math for each filter type to allow you to study the transfer functions. A must for every audio design bench. My first edition is loaded with notes and flags from regular use over the years.   jlm

CMOS Cookbook
by Don Lancaster

A very good reference for audio designers who need to implement a bit of digital logic in their designs. This is where I learned to use the CMOS logic family. CMOS logic is appropriate for use with audio because it is compatible with typical audio power supplies. It is full of practical design tips . . .such as how to debounce switch contacts with a contact conditioning circuit. My 1st edition copy has served me well.   jlm

The Art of Electronics
by Paul Horowitz

I frequently hear this popular title recommended as an excellent introduction to both analog and digital electronics.   jlm

Introductory Circuit Analysis
by Robert L. Boylestad

This is a very popular textbook covering the basics of AC and DC circuit analysis. Includes examples in PSpice.   jlm

Engineering Circuit Analysis
(McGraw Hill Series in Electrical and Computer Engineering)
by William H. Hayt and Jack E. Kemmerly

This is a standard electrical engineering textbook on AC and DC circuits. It is widely used in many college electronics courses.   jlm

Electronic Principles
by Albert Paul Malvino

This classic textbook on linear electronics which is now in it's 6th edition. It assumes you know AC and DC circuits. It starts with basic semiconductor theory and then moves into diode and transistor circuits. Several chapters are devoted to amplifiers. My old 2nd edition still gets some use.   jlm

Small Signal Audio Design
by Douglas Self

This is a handbook the provides an extensive collection of circuits that are useful for a wide range of audio design projects. This is the 3rd edition   jlm

Audio Power Amplifier Design
by Douglas Self

Now in its 6th edition this book is an essential reference for audio power amplifier designers and engineers. jlm
